‘Çok Yönlü Annem’ adlı baskımın arkasındaki fikir şöyleydi: 80’lerde Londra’da yaşarken annem orada oryantal (göbek dansı) yapardı. Dans ederken aslında oldukça ünlü hale gelmişti, çünkü ona kostüm dikmeyi ve dans etmeyi öğreten ünlü bir dansöz, Prenses Banu tarafından yetiştirilmiştir.
Bir gün okuldan sonra beni yanına aldı. Erken yatmamı söyledi, sonra gece geç bir saatte beni uyandırıp dans ettiği kulübe, Gallipoli’ye götürdü. O gece beş ya da altı farklı performans sergiledi. Sahne adı Aysel’di. Önce zillerle (parmak zilleriyle) dans ederdi, sonra bastonla. Ardından, karnının üstüne küçük bir mumluk koyar, içinde yanan bir mumla dizlerinin üstüne çöker ve karnını kullanarak o mumu göğsüne kadar yükseltirdi.
Tüm bu performansları yapardı ve ben annemin yeteneğine inanılmaz hayran kalırdım. O zamanlar oryantal dans bir sanat formu olarak kabul edilmiyordu, bu yüzden annem yıllarca bunu gizli tuttu. Ama ben annemle gurur duyuyorum. İki çocuğunu tek başına büyüttü ve geceleri çalışarak bize bakabilmek için elinden geleni yaptı. Bu baskıyı yapıyor olmaktan gurur duyuyorum.
The whole concept behind my print called ' My Multitasking Mother' was. Back in the 80s when we used to live in London. My mother used to belly dance there. When she belly danced she became actually pretty famous because she was brought up by a famous belly dancer called Princess Banu who taught her how to sew costumes and how to dance. One day, she took me after school. She made me to go to bed early and then she woke me up late at night to take me to the the club that she used to play dancing called Gallipoli. She would do five or six different performances. Her her stage name was Aysel. At first she'd used the finger symbols. Then she'd use the cane. After that she would place a candle holder with a lite candle on her belly ,then go on her knees and bring it all the way up to her chest by using her stomach. So she would do all these performance and I was very very amazed to see how talented my mother was. Back in the days belly dancing was not accepted as an art form , so my mom has kept it under the rug for years, but I'm proud with my mother, She raised two kids by herself while working at night to provide for her kids. I'm proud that we're doing this print.
