Here’s a number of recent pieces by street and commercial artist Joe Iurato (previously) who leaves site-specific wooden cutouts in locations around New Jersey. The pieces are often based on photography (his own and the work of others) as well as references to characters found in famous paintings. The unidentified street artist Banksy has re-emerged in Gaza to create a political mini-documentary about life inside the war-torn region.
In the short film, posted to his official website on Wednesday, the artist appears to enter Gaza via underground tunnels before emerging through a metal door and into the rubble.
Typical of Banksy's work, the video is a pointed political statement about the dire situation for residents of Gaza. At least 2,200 Palestinians were killed in last summer's war with Israel, according to the United Nations. (Israel argues that the militant group Hamas fires rockets out of civilian areas. At least five Israeli civilians and 67 soldiers were killed in the conflict.)
The video is also sharply satirical, framed as a travel ad that begins by saying, "Make this the year you discover a new destination." Glowing descriptions flash by such as "nestled in an exclusive setting," as the cameraman pans to show areas of total destruction, and "watched over by friendly neighbours," before listing the number of homes blown up by missile fire.
Among the destroyed buildings and bleak reality, Banksy is shown painting a piece titled "Bomb Damage" that depicts the Greek goddess Niobe cowering and weeping in the only part that remains of a building. The goddess, a bereaved mother who lost her children due to pride, illustrates in Greek mythology how the gods will not hesitate to take vengeance on human arrogance.

Beijing-based artist Cao Hui has constructed and dissected classical sculptures to reveal raw, fleshy, innards. Hui has previously pulled the guts out of a sofa and opened the gruesome, gory inside of a suitcase.
Cao insists that people used to be given the title of "artist" based on their "degree of mastery in imitating nature" though now, he says, "It seems artists are no longer happy just being artists, but are driven by their inborn love of performance to try out new roles, such as philosopher, scientist, doctor or perhaps even engineer. I think artists really want to play god more than anything else, and will stop at nothing to construct a truth that validates the self."
Renowned photographer Sandro Miller has worked together with legendary Hollywood A-Lister John Malkovich many times, but when Miller wanted to celebrate the photography greats that had inspired and guided him, he had to do something special. So he, with Malkovich as his dashing unisex model, recreated some of those influential photographers’ most important portraits in a photo series called “Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to photographic masters.”
The series puts both Miller’s exceptional photography and Malkovich’s masterful acting talents front and center. Miller gets each amazing portrait’s lighting, mood and composition down perfectly, while Malkovich replicates the subject’s emotions and expressions so perfectly that the photos become nearly indistinguishable, regardless of the age or gender of the original subject. And it was all done without Photoshop!
