Street Art

Neyse efendim, güreş seyrederken Andre the Giant denen şu adama acayip kopuyordum.

My interest in street art started out at when I was very young. Growing up in New York and London I was inspired by all the graffiti that surrounded me. In the beginning of the 90's I was really into skateboarding (even though I sucked big time at it) and so it automatically drew me into the visuals it was associated with whether it being stickers or just just straight out graffiti. Being a naive kid, I used to watch American Wrestling, always questioning if it were real or not, kinda of questioning if  Santa was real or not. Anyhow while watching wrestling I was blow away with this one guy called Andre the Giant. He was 7'4" and 500 pounds which blew me away, he was a beast. So as time went by and I grew older into a hairy troubled man, I started seeing wheat paste  illustrations of him on the streets of New York. It definitely caught my attention so I looked into who was behind this image. That's when I was introduced to Shepard Fairey and his artwork.  At the end of the 90's I started to get involved on the streets. As I had been to a fine arts school, I had all the techniques ready to spill onto the streets. I started out with just sticking up stickers while in New York with the tag name OSMAN.

When I decided to move back to Turkey in 2000, I found that their were really no stencil work on the streets. I at the time was not very experienced in this area but I wanted to have a go anyhow. I started out with stenciling the Obey image mainly in Cihangir and Taksim. Shepard Fairey's was all for getting the Obey image out as much as possible and made it accessible for everyone to use it as they pleased.  After some time I thought that I should add my own touch to the image so I added a mustache  to the image and put OSMAN under it. I thought it would be a good way for people to connect with the image intertwining eastern culture with the west. Unfortunately I have received comments and have read articles saying that I stole the image and this and that. But if only had they done a little more research as I have done numerous interviews regarding this subject. But who gives a shit! Their is a saying by Jean-Luc Godard and he says "It's not where you take things from, it's where you take them to".

After feeling that I had completed my mission with the Obey image I produced a whole bunch of  street art. One series that caught much appraise was a piece that I did with wheat paste with street kids playing hide and seek throughout the city. I later did an installation of the piece for the 9th International Bienalle with Luca Frie, Turbo and flypropaganda.

So here are some of the stencils I have been able to document over the past 10 years. Its not too much but when your on the run you take what you can get.
